The Facts

The Armenian Genocide of 1915-1916 was the first genocide of the 20th century and one of the largest in world history” (Armenian). It began when the Ottoman Empire was on the decline.  They were losing land fast and knew that they would be majorly downsized within the next years, so the Turks, who were the majority of the empire, wished to create their own state.  The Armenians were the only remaining christian minority in the empire, so they demanded their own nation, which would have taken away even more land from the Turks. “The leaders of the Young Turk government were xenophobic nationalists who believed that multinationalism had exploited and weakened the Ottoman Empire” (Armenian).  They finally decided that the Armenians were to much of a risk and too bothersome to keep around, so they came to the decision to eliminate them.
Family members watch as on of their own is left to die.
