The Cause

“The genocide was the culmination of more than 20 years of persecution of the Armenian minority in the Ottoman Empire” (Armenian). The Young leaders of the Ottoman Empire were Turks, and they wished to create a homogeneous state with no minorities.  In the years before the genocide, the Ottomans were allied with the Germans. The superiority of German Militarism gave Ottoman leaders the incentive to create a better and more forceful army.  “Turkish officials arrested Armenian social and political leaders on April 24, 1915, deporting them to Anatolia and murdering them” (Armenian). When WWI began, the Turks used the war to cover up the extermination of thousands of Armenians.
